It started in 1979. Les de Asis, a Filipino-American with a passion for butterfly knives, was hand-building quality blades in a small California machine shop. He moved the company to Oregon City in 1990—the heart of American knife making—to be closer to skilled craftsmen and better materials.
Today, that 144,000-square-foot factory outside Portland is still home. Every knife is assembled by hand, right here in the USA, using premium American steels. Benchmade was the first to use laser cutters in knife making, and they still hold to aerospace tolerances.
